A, B, H1N1, H5N1 - what the hell does it mean?

An excellent article explaining all about Influenza labelling and the origins of this new flu can be found here - http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/10/AR2009051002064.html

Wow is this real? I thought it originated in Mexico. The news reported 32 people dead from the AH1N1 in Puerto Rico. (where I live).

It made the jump from pigs to humans in Mexico, but the virus that has been in pigs for the past 10 years or so has spread all over the world already.

We've had 16 people die in New Zealand so far from swine flu (AH1N1)- we don't have the current stats on how many people have died from normal seasonal flu this year, but I suspect it's higher than 16.
